NATIONAL CENTER FOR FOOD PROTECTION

The National Center for Food Protection (the "Center") is a global food protection resource development and collaboration network.  The Center's mission is to facilitate the exchange of information, generation of new ideas, and acceleration of technologies that will enhance the safety of the global food supply.  To achieve its mission, the Center has established the International Food Protection Training Institute, the Emerging Technology Accelerator, and the Global Food Protection Symposia. 

The NCFP is a unique, market-driven, public-private collaboration focused on testing, training, and technology development involving food protection strategies and systems.

The Center is the result of a W. K. Kellogg Foundation-sponsored study of the feasibility for a national center for food protection and applied research in Battle Creek.

INTERNATIONAL FOOD PROTECTION TRAINING INSTITUTE

The International Food Protection Training Institute (IFPTI) was established to deliver career-spanning, standards-based food protection training to state, local, tribal, and territorial food protection professionals.

  • 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.
  • Working in partnership with the Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO), and in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
  • Received the support of the FDA-sponsored Partnership for Food Protection: Federal, State, Local Collaboration, Training Working Group.
  • Advisory Council includes federal government agencies, key state/local food protection associations, and select industry associations.
  • Trained approximately 300 food protection professionals from 28 states since July 2009.  Targeting to train 1,000 state and local food protection professionals in 2010.
  • Receiving $1 million appropriation in FY 2010 Federal budget.  An appropriation of $8 million has been included in the President's FY 2011 budget.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGY ACCELERATOR

The Emerging Technology Accelerator (ETA) was established to advance the development of novel food protection technologies which will enhance the safety of the global food supply.  The advantages of the ETA's approach include: Disciplined and efficient investment in, and management of, emerging opportunities; identification, evaluation, financing, and management of ground breaking technology, and diverse advisory board composition: strategic investors, financial investors, life science/biotech executives, accelerator executive, and academia.

Convene Global Food Protection Symposia to facilitate the exchange of information, generation of new ideas, and acceleration of applications and processes to influence the policies and practices within the food protection community.
