GLOBAL FOOD PROTECTION INSTITUTE

A Community of Action Advancing Food Protection
The Global Food Protection Institute (GFPI) was formed in 2009 to improve public health by advancing food safety. Initial funding for GFPI was provided through a grant from the W.K Kellogg Foundation. GFPI has established three core initiatives to deliver on its vision for a safer global food supply:

  • International Food Protection Training Institute (IFPTI)
  • Emerging Technology Accelerator (ETA)
  • Imagined Food Futures Conference and Symposia (IFF).

Through these initiatives, we aim to improve public health and help reduce mortalities, morbidity and economic costs associated with food-borne illnesses.

INTERNATIONAL FOOD PROTECTION TRAINING INSTITUTE

Building the training infrastructure for the national integrated food safety system
The International Food Protection Training Institute (IFPTI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving food safety by providing career-spanning, standards-based training for food protection professionals. IFPTI is building and administering the training infrastructure for the nation’s integrated food safety system. Working with federal regulatory and public health officials, IFPTI is establishing and overseeing the implementation of a career-spanning food protection training curriculum that will increase capacity, and assure competency and equivalency throughout all regulatory jurisdictions in meeting established U.S. federal food safety standards. IMAGINED FOOD FEATURES
Convening communities of action to influence the adoption of food protection policies and practices that lead to improved public health
As the world develops new technologies and knowledge for improved food protection, we need to ensure they are used.  To support the adoption of policies and practices that improve food safety, we have established Imagined Food Futures Conferences & Symposia (IFF). IFF drives communication between private, government, public and academic stakeholders that influence food safety. In so doing, it helps unify what has traditionally been a fragmented food protection sector to help improve public health.  To learn more about IFF, visit www.gfpi.org/iff.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGY ACCELERATOR

A private equity model advancing the development of novel food protection technologies.
Technology can play a key role in protecting the food supply and consumer safety. There is currently an urgent need for new tools that quickly, affordably and accurately detect contamination so handlers and regulators can take swift remedial action. In pursuit of our mission to advance the development of technologies that protect global food safety, GFPI has established the Emerging Technology Accelerator (ETA). ETA provides entrepreneurial support to fast track the development of emerging technologies that could safeguard public health. This initiative will turn promising discoveries into compelling commercial opportunities by identifying, evaluating, and financing them, while also helping manage the pathway to market.
